Access and Policies
VBCF NGS is a facility staffed by academics and technicians. Our users include researchers from VBC-based research institutes, external academic institutions, and industry.
Please find our list of services here.
Information for Users
All initial and general enquiries should be addressed to ngs-support@vbcf.ac.at.
Following initial contact, a meeting with an appropriate staff member can be arranged, if needed, to discuss project details, including the experimental approach, sample requirements, and whether training or supervision is required.
New users will be asked to register on our platform here.
Please familiarise yourself with the platform, pricing, and general guidelines.
Set up your sequencing request by specifying the cost assignment, selecting the sequencing platform, and creating samples with unique IDs. For more detailed information, please refer to our Forskalle guide here.
General Policy
Use of the NGS Facility services requires approval from the person responsible for the relevant cost centre, usually the group leader.
Use of NGS services and infrastructure is restricted to material classified as safety level S1. Infectious or hazardous material cannot be accepted.
Our preparation types require different amounts of input material. Please find detailed requirements here.
All input material undergoes an initial quality control (QC) assessment.
If the material does not meet our requirements, it will either be returned for further purification or the request will be completed without further processing. The QC assessment will still be charged.
For resubmissions, please create a new request. Processing of material that does not meet the requirements may be possible at the user’s own risk, provided that an agreement is signed by the principal investigator (PI).
Maximum Turnaround Times for Illumina Services*
User-prepared samples: 3 weeks
Facility-prepared samples: 5 weeks
*Turnaround times for shared lanes may be longer because barcode compatibility must be ensured.

Research project
Research projects are the equivalent of contract research organizations (CRO). The customer submits the starting material/sample and receives the ready-to-use data for publication. Hence, core facility members are often co-authoring and involved in the entire publication process.
Full research service
The user submits the sample, we perform a pre-defined workflow (incl. QC) and process the raw data. Data interpretation or contributions to publications cannot be offered in this service mode.
In general, the VBCF’s general cooperation conditions apply. Please contact the NGS team for further information and to discuss your specific project needs.
